Looking At Sir John A.

Recently, with all that is going on right now several statues of historical figures have been vandalized as they have been deemed racist. One of these is a couple of our first Prime Minister of Canada Sir.John A MacDonald. Statues of him in Montreal and Kitchener Ontario have had painted on them.
This has put me in a bind as I have studied and admired the man for many years. As a matter of fact I have  looked up to him and shaped some my political views based on his. I can honestly as a father of confederation he is a big reason why Canada is not a part of the United States and cling to our British roots.
My uncle posted a picture of a vandalized statue on Facebook and suggested (he a bigger admirer of Sir John A than I am) that he would put him aside. I found this difficult as I see him as a nation builder especially at a time when our country is very divided geopolitically and also by racial strife. He managed to help bring English and French Canada into a single country independent from the expansion of the United States. Also ,built the railroad which connected the provinces from east to west.
Not to mention he lead the Conservative party to victory five political victories and served as Prime Minister for 19 years. This is when the Conservative party stood Canada and it’s institutions not like the Conservative party of Canada (Or even the Liberal Party of Canada)which almost wants us to become a satellite country of the US and ignores or even shows contempt’s for some of our institutions.
But there are the issues of racism such as the Chinese head tax that occurred under his watch. Not to mention his relationship with First Nations people which was all accounts dreadful particularly the execution of Louis Riel along with the Northwest rebellion. He was not above referring to them as
“Savages” and other derogatory terms.
With this I have to agree to put him to the side for now and hope he will be remembered in a positive light in the future. For right now I am to remember that there various people groups in Canada that need to have their voices heard and have equal rights and be accept into our culture. I also may to look elsewhere for political inspiration which may be difficult as most of our politicians are devoid of any real ideas and not particularly inspiring.I do have my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who is my ultimate inspiration.
