My Two Cents On George Floyd
Many of us have heard about the death of George Floyd an African-American man who died of suffocation while being arrested for allegedly passing a counterfeit 20 dollar bill at a Minneapolis grocery store. The officer who put his knee on Floyd’s neck and cut of his oxygen off was been charged with manslaughter. The other officers on the scene were fired as a result.
This has sparked numerous protests in various US cities (some of them have turned violent). Also, has bought back attention to use of excessive force by police especially on African-American males and the problems of race relations in America.
There was clearly the use of excessive force for a guy who allegedly passed a counterfeit bill. He probably was confused at first and maybe disoriented which may be seen as aggression but there no reason use a hold such as this. When I worked as a DSW many years ago part of my training was using holds to subdue violent behaviour and one of this we were taught was to never to compress the neck or hold a client as to cut of their oxygen.
There has been several incidents of African-American males being killed by police largely by unnecessary force and police officers being criminally charged. This appears to have gotten worse in Trump’s America as race relations appear at an all time low. There have also been cases of white people calling the police on African-American males when they feel “threatened ”(I will briefly cover one such incident in a bit).
Speaking of Trump he has been mostly silent on this except for the rioters which are dismissed as thugs by his administration. Strange since he is seldom at a loss for words but likely doesn’t risk his re-election chances by risk alienating a good segment of his support (conservative middle-aged white males).
This is also not an isolated incident has there have been a couple of incidents in news as well that have highlighted these problems.
Days before the Floyd death a woman named Amy Cooper In New York who is white called the police on Christoper Cooper (No relation)an African American in Central Park. Amy called the cops on Chris after he suggested she leash her dog (which is the law). Ms.Cooper was fired from her job at an investment firm and has faced backlash from social media.
In Glynn Country Georgia on Feb 23 an African American jogger Ahmaud Arbury who was unarmed and jogging through a white neighbourhood was shot and killed during a “citizen arrest” as he apparently matched the description of a burglary suspect. Three white males including a retired police officer have been charged.
These are not likely isolated incidents as there are others that are not reported in the media. It seems the work of the civil rights movement and the Obama administration is quickly being undone and it is a very divided time in America.
