Thoughts On US Election
With what has gone on south of the border over the past week,I thought I would add my two cents to what was the closest election in recent history. The world was watching this one closely and many Canadians (myself included) were anxious about the results.
First, I am glad Biden won because especially with everything going on they need a steady on top. His predecessor was a polarizing figure and has not handled the COVID-19 situation very well. The United States has been one of the hardest hit countries and need a statesmen and not someone who plays into conspiracy theories or attacks people who have the facts.
The country however is very divided as the map of the US looked like a national flag as it was blue, red and blue again. It is divided by geography but by race as well as we have seen the racial divide with police shootings and the separation of immigrant families which have not been helped by this administration. It is also divided by religious and secular almost among party lines as well.
This however is just beginning as Biden will have to begin to put a fractured country back together again. As well as having to deal with the fallout from COVID and its effect on the economy which hasn’t fully realized yet. They will have the change the way things were done as things may be on the verge of being undone.
There were some interesting results as in spite of the Republicans wining the Senate and making gains in the House there were quite and few progressive gains. Two openly gay African American males won in New York State. Sarah McBride became the first transgender person elected to the Senate in Maine and the Gang of Four(Alexandra Cortea-Ortiz et al.) were easily re-elected in their seats.
The biggest victory had to be the election of Kamala Harris to the office of Vice-President as she is not only to that office but the first African-American and South Asian to hold that office. All eyes will be on her as she will not only drive the more progressive agenda but could be the next President especially if Biden who is 78 decides to only hang around for one term. It will interesting to see what will happen.
This new administration will have their work cut out for them and the world will be watching what happens in America post-Trump.
